A Hand-Built Italian Bike: Redefining 1980s Aero Thinking
In the world of cycling, some brands leave a lasting impression, while others fade into obscurity. Simoncini, an Italian framebuilder, falls into the latter category. But don't let their low profile fool you; this family-run business has a rich history of crafting exceptional bicycles. Established in 1949 by brothers Renato and Oddino Simoncini, the workshop in Castelfiorentino, Tuscany, has built frames for renowned brands like Ciocc, Viner, and Orbea. Now, under the leadership of third-generation Simoncini, Eugenio, the brand is making a comeback with frames bearing the family name.
This 1988 frameset is a rare example of Simoncini's early work. It showcases the brand's innovative use of star-shaped Columbus tubing, likely the SLX variant. This design, combined with a sloping top tube and 26-inch front wheel, gives the bike its distinctive, low-slung look. The trend of pursuit bikes with low-profile designs was all the rage in the 1980s as cyclists sought to optimize aerodynamics. However, their success was short-lived, as the UCI banned bikes with different wheel sizes.
True to the era, the bike features time trial bars, specifically the Cinelli LA 84 model, paired with a 1/R stem from the same brand. The Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 saw low-profile bikes dominate the track, further solidifying the trend. The bike's aerodynamic enhancements don't stop there; it also includes a Campagnolo aero bottle and cage, as well as a Campy aero seat post.
The build remains an all-Italian affair, with Campagnolo at the forefront. The Record groupset features iconic Delta brake calipers and even includes the pedals. The Shamal wheels, with 650c at the front and 700c at the rear, use 16-bladed spokes, with eight crossed on the gear side and eight laced radially on the 'off' side. The bike is completed with Vittoria Competition tyres and a Selle San Marco Rolls saddle, covered in white leather.
This bike is a testament to the innovative spirit of the 1980s and Simoncini's commitment to quality. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most overlooked brands can offer the most remarkable creations.
