Aimee Canny's Historic 400 IM Debut: 4:03.36 at Cavalier Invite 2026 | Swimming Highlights (2026)

Imagine nailing a nationally-ranked swim in your very first attempt at an event. That's exactly what Virginia senior Aimee Canny did at the 2026 Cavalier Invite, stunning everyone with a 4:03.36 in her 400 IM debut, catapulting her to the #6 spot nationally this season.

The 2026 Cavalier Invite, held from February 5th-7th at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, VA, showcased some incredible talent. You can find all the results on Meet Mobile under “2026 Cavalier Invite.” For the detail-oriented, here are the links to the daily results:

While it's not unheard of for international swimmers to excel in short-course yards events, Canny's feat is still remarkable. The 400 IM is a grueling race, demanding both endurance and technical prowess across four different strokes. Most swimmers take several attempts to master it. But Canny, hailing from South Africa, demonstrated her versatility and raw talent by splitting an impressive 55.55/1:02.61/1:09.85/55.35 in her very first try.

And this is the part most people miss: Canny's success wasn't entirely out of the blue. Her previous times in the 500 free (4:34.26) and 200 IM (1:54.05) hinted at her potential for the 400 IM.

But here's where it gets controversial: Could Canny's performance be a sign of a shifting landscape in NCAA swimming? With the new championship format, will we see more swimmers like Canny strategically targeting events they haven't traditionally focused on?

Canny's dominance wasn't limited to the 400 IM. She also clocked lifetime bests in the 100 free (47.79) and 100 breast (58.30). This versatility suggests a potential lineup shift for her at the NCAA Championships in March, possibly opting for the 400 IM/200 breast/200 IM combination.

The Cavaliers as a whole dominated the meet. Katie Grimes secured the women's 200 back title in 1:51.21, climbing to 10th nationally. Emma Weber continued the winning streak in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.96, just shy of her season best. Tess Howley rounded out the individual victories with a win in the 200 butterfly (1:52.53).

Leah Hayes, another Cavalier standout, swam the 400 IM twice, clocking 4:05.21 in the prelims and 4:05.68 in a solo evening trial. Despite her strong performances, Hayes slipped to 7th nationally after Canny's breakthrough.

William & Mary Tribe also made their mark. Lauren Tucker kicked off the session with a commanding win in the 1650 free (16:41.62), a lifetime best by over 15 seconds. They closed the meet by claiming the women's 400 freestyle relay in 3:29.02.
On the men's side, William & Mary's Tyler Barritt, a freshman, secured the 1650 freestyle title in 15:40.67, just shy of his personal best. Virginia's Jack Aikins and Maximus Williamson followed suit with victories in the 200 back (1:41.02) and 100 free (42.60), respectively.

St. Bonaventure's Corey Su edged out William & Mary's Jackson Mueller in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.44), while Virginia's Dillon Wright sealed the deal with a win in the 200 butterfly (1:47.22).

The Cavaliers seem poised for another NCAA title, but Canny's performance raises intriguing questions about individual strategies and the evolving landscape of collegiate swimming.

What do you think? Is Canny's 400 IM debut a sign of things to come? Will we see more swimmers branching out into new events under the revised NCAA format? Let us know in the comments!
