Diotima Fall 2026: Rachel Scott's Artistic Reverence & Wilfredo Lam Inspiration | NYFW (2026)

Diotima Fall 2026: A Fusion of Art and Fashion

Rachel Scott's recent endeavors have been nothing short of remarkable. She graced the official New York Fashion Week calendar with her debut at Proenza Schouler, and then, in a bold move, unveiled her own Diotima brand. Joking about her hectic schedule, she quipped, 'We invent time,' alluding to the challenge of balancing these two highly anticipated collections.

Diotima's inspiration stems from the captivating artwork of Wilfredo Lam, a master whose creations blend Afro-Cuban symbolism, Caribbean spirituality, and European modernism, infused with a profound political and cultural consciousness. Scott shared her deep connection to Lam's work, just a day before the show.

The collaboration with Lam's estate was a meticulous process, approached with research, care, and reverence. The collection draws from iconic pieces like 'La Jungla,' 'Femme Cheval,' and 'Omi Obini,' showcasing Lam's unique artistic vision.

Craftsmanship, a cornerstone of Diotima's identity, became a powerful medium for memory and meaning. Scott's goal was to engage with Lam's style rather than replicate it. She introduced organza intarsia on dresses, a technique evolved from her spring collection, with a more exaggerated and muted color palette. Fine-gauge merino knits, jacquards, and wool-silk digital prints added a layer of austere depth.

The show notes revealed a deliberate play with color, where fabric faces appeared drained, only to reveal intensity on the inside of garments. Translucent textiles showcased the body, with dresses and knits strategically separating and exposing skin. Pressed mohair with viscose lapels mimicked fur, while an equestrian theme influenced several silhouettes, avoiding the trap of costume. Riding jackets emphasized the hips, elongated columns stretched the body, and lines and fringe evoked the mane and whip.

Knit belts, twisted and taut, exuded a quiet sense of power, as did crystal mesh designs, a signature Diotima fabrication. These long-sleeve pieces with high necks and exposed backs gracefully descended the runway, attracting a front-row audience that included Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Outerwear stood out with its nubby, monumental coats, offering a tactile, protective experience in rich colors. Many of these coats were crafted in collaboration with Refugee Atelier in New York, further enriching the collection by incorporating the skills and histories of women who shared Lam's themes of displacement and resilience.

At its core, Scott presented a deeply personal collection that confidently ventured into the modern world, showcasing her unique artistic vision and commitment to innovation.
