The Pilbara's mining industry, a significant contributor to WA's carbon emissions, has turned to renewable energy projects to decarbonize. Companies are investing in solar and, in Fortescue's case, wind, to power electric heavy vehicles. But here's the catch: less than 2% of energy generated in the Pilbara is renewable, according to the state government.

And this is the part most people miss... Wind energy, unlike solar, has the potential to produce power during the evening. Mr. Otranto highlights this unique advantage, stating that the Nullagine wind farm will complement solar energy, especially given the region's strong wind patterns at night and in the late afternoon/early evening.

The China-made turbines, estimated to reach a towering 277 meters, will be the tallest in Australia. Otranto explains that taller turbines generate more energy, requiring fewer turbines to produce the same power output.

The high costs associated with wind energy compared to solar may deter potential investors.
