Nintendo Switch 2's GameChat webcam feature has been a hot topic, but it's been a bumpy road for smartphone compatibility. Here's the latest twist: Your Google Pixel phone can now step in as a webcam for the Switch 2, but there's a catch!
When Nintendo initially launched GameChat, they claimed that most USB-compatible cameras, including smartphones, would work seamlessly with the console. However, reality fell short of this promise for many smartphone users. But now, a ray of hope has emerged for Google Pixel owners.
A recent update has enabled this feature on all recent Pixel models, although the specific devices supported remain a mystery. Android Authority reported that an X user successfully connected their Switch 2 to a Pixel phone, and this was soon confirmed by other users and The Verge. It seems the feature works on both the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, as well as the Pixel 9 Pro.
The question remains: What made this possible? Was it a software update from Google or Nintendo? If it's Google, users might need the latest Android 16 December update for compatibility. Meanwhile, the Switch 2's software update on Nov. 25 focused primarily on bug fixes and stability.
Google introduced USB webcam functionality to its smartphones with Android 14 in 2023, but no other manufacturers have followed suit, leaving Pixel as the sole Android device series compatible with the Switch 2.
While you can also use an iPhone as a Switch 2 webcam with an adapter, many webcam manufacturers have been busy tweaking their software to support GameChat. If you're not keen on experimenting with your gadgets, Nintendo's own webcams sold with the console are a reliable option, albeit less portable than your smartphone.
But here's where it gets controversial: Should you settle for the convenience of using your smartphone as a webcam, or opt for the dedicated webcams offered by Nintendo? What do you think is the best setup for streaming with the Switch 2? Share your thoughts in the comments!
