Dr. Wajid Akhter, the secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), shared with Sky News that Muslims in the UK have varying opinions on when Ramadan should begin. For some, it's when the moon is sighted over Mecca, the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad, while others look to closer Muslim countries like Turkey or Morocco, or even the UK itself.
Dr. Akhter emphasized the need for a unified answer, stating that it's time for the country to come together on this matter.
But how is Ramadan confirmed in Saudi Arabia? The sighting of the Ramadan crescent takes place at the Tabuk Observatory, an annual event to mark the beginning and end of a lunar cycle. On a specific evening, teams of moon-sighters gather to search for the crescent after sunset.
Interestingly, the UK's HM Nautical Almanac Office predicted that countries like Saudi Arabia and the UK might not have clear visibility of the crescent moon until the following night. However, the UAE Presidential Court confirmed a sighting, leading to today, February 18th, being declared the first official day, with fasting commencing at dawn.
Other countries like Turkey, Oman, Australia, Malaysia, France, and Singapore have announced that Ramadan will start a day later, on February 19th.
So, why do these dates differ in the UK? Dr. Akhter attributes this "schism" to a significant portion of the community feeling that the moon should be sighted in the UK rather than relying on another country, even one with holy cities.
He added, "It's frustrating for many families and communities to have separate start dates and Eids." He believes the UK's diverse Muslim community, compared to countries like Germany and France, makes it challenging to follow one rule, something the MCB aims to address.
Dr. Akhter suggests that people continue to look to countries outside the UK for Ramadan dates due to historical reliance on birth countries for religious teachings. However, he believes this is changing.
Imad Ahmed, director of the New Crescent Society, a group encouraging Muslims in the UK to determine the start of each lunar month independently, agrees that the UK has never had a united Islamic calendar. He explains that Muslims currently look to Saudi Arabia or countries like Morocco, which is likely to start Ramadan on a different date due to different moon-sighting times.
"We expect Saudi to start fasting on Wednesday, maybe Europe, Asia, and Africa on Thursday, and other parts of Asia and Australia on Friday. This is because the moon is not visible everywhere on Earth on the same date," Mr. Ahmed said.
The New Crescent Society aims to train Muslims in the UK to observe the moon locally, reducing the need to rely on other countries for moon sightings and Islamic calendar decisions.
But why is the crescent moon so significant? Mr. Ahmed explains that astronomy plays a vital role in Muslim ritual life. A month in the Islamic calendar is either 29 or 30 days, corresponding to the time it takes for the moon to complete its phases from one new crescent to the next.
"If the moon is sighted on the 29th day, the month begins. If not, it's rounded up to 30 days," he said.
For Ramadan, Muslims worldwide gather, gazing into the sky, hoping to spot the crescent. If they see it, Ramadan has begun, and fasting commences. At the month's end, they look for the next crescent, signaling the start of Eid celebrations.
