And this is the part most people miss: there are signs that India is under pressure to increase U.S. crude purchases and explore Venezuelan oil. In fact, traders Vitol and Trafigura have been tasked by the U.S. to facilitate these sales.
Indian refiners are being encouraged to prioritize U.S. and Venezuelan crude in their spot market tenders. According to Bloomberg, executives from refineries with knowledge of the situation revealed this information on Wednesday.
Analysts suggest that India could reasonably increase its U.S. crude intake to around 400,000 barrels per day, up from an estimated 225,000 bpd imported last year. However, price, sulfur content, and shipping costs from the U.S. coast will influence Indian refiners' decisions, as they seek the cheapest non-sanctioned supply.
Interestingly, India's largest private refiner, Reliance Industries, has reportedly resumed buying Venezuelan crude. This marks the first Indian purchase of oil from Venezuela, the world's top reserves holder, since the U.S. took control of Venezuela's oil sales early last month.
So far this year, Indian refiners have increased purchases of West African and Middle Eastern crudes to compensate for the loss of Russian supply.
