Norway's Crown Princess Faces Intense Scrutiny Over Past Friendship with Jeffrey Epstein
It's a story that has sent ripples of shock and concern through Norway: the Crown Princess's past association with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recently unearthed emails, spanning from 2011 to 2014, paint a picture of a surprisingly warm correspondence between Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Epstein. These hundreds of emails, brought to light by the U.S. Justice Department's release of files just a week ago, have raised serious questions.
But here's where it gets controversial... The exchanges reportedly detail plans for in-person meetings and reveal that the Crown Princess spent four days at Epstein's Florida estate, even when he wasn't present. For many Norwegians, the friendly tone of these messages is deeply unsettling, especially considering Mette-Marit's own acknowledgment of his past. In an email from October 2011, she wrote, "Googled u after last email. Agree didn't look too good." This suggests she was aware of his 2008 jail term.
Initially, the palace issued a statement last Saturday where the Crown Princess expressed regret and admitted to "poor judgment." However, the public and media pressure mounted, demanding more clarity on the extent of her acquaintance with Epstein. In a subsequent statement on Friday, the palace conveyed that the Crown Princess is "deeply saddened" by her failure to recognize Epstein's true nature sooner. She indicated a desire to offer a more comprehensive explanation but felt she was in a "very difficult situation" and needed time to "gather herself."
She personally stated, "It is important for me to say I am sorry to all those I have disappointed. Some of the content in the messages between Epstein and me does not represent the person I want to be."
And this is the part most people miss... While the Crown Princess navigates this personal storm, her family is also facing significant challenges. Crown Prince Haakon, when speaking to reporters in Oslo, acknowledged the immense family strain, stating, "there was a lot going on in his family and the most important thing in the past few days 'has been to take care of the flock.'" He emphasized their support for their son, Marius, and the other children, ensuring they are cared for, and that he must also "take care of the crown princess."
Adding to the family's concerns, Crown Princess Mette-Marit is gravely ill with pulmonary fibrosis, and doctors are preparing to place her on a lung transplant waiting list.
Meanwhile, Mette-Marit's son, Marius, gave evidence in court on Wednesday, visibly struggling with emotion and holding back tears as he spoke of being hounded by the press since he was just three years old. If convicted by the three judges at Oslo District Court, he could face a minimum of 10 years in prison. His legal troubles are ongoing, with his arrest on Sunday – the fourth time – on suspicion of assault, wielding a knife, and violating a restraining order.
Even Princess Ingrid Alexandra, the Crown Princess's 22-year-old daughter and second in line to the Norwegian throne, has voiced her frustration with the media. In comments shared on a private Instagram account with nearly 800 followers, she criticized the press for making baseless claims. While stressing her remarks weren't directed at any specific family member, she expressed feeling overwhelmed by "personal attacks" and declared, "Enough is enough."
When approached by the BBC, the palace declined to comment further on these developing situations.
