Norwich, the UK's hidden gem, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation, with plans to build a 'new Venice' in the heart of the city. This ambitious project aims to turn Norwich into the 'best place to live in England', enhancing its already unique charm and spirit. With over 300 independent shops and major chains like John Lewis, Norwich boasts a diverse retail scene. The city's cobbled streets, however, have a higher vacancy rate than the national average, and it's also been ranked as the kindest city in the UK. But the real excitement lies in the upcoming redevelopment, dubbed East Norwich, which promises to create a vibrant new quarter of the city.
The East Norwich Delivery Board, formed in 2022, includes local councils and Homes England. If successful, this project will result in the construction of 3,500 new homes, nestled between the picturesque River Wensum and River Ware, just a 15-minute walk from the historic city centre. One of the key sites for this development is Carrow Works, where Colman's Mustard, a local icon, has been produced for 160 years. The vision extends beyond this site, encompassing the former Colman's location, Deal Ground, May Gurney, and Utilities sites.
The potential impact of East Norwich is immense. It could create 4,000 new jobs, significantly boosting Norwich's thriving economy. Carli Harper, the City Council's cabinet member for finance and major projects, emphasizes the project's ability to become a new quarter of the city. Stefan Gurney, executive director of the Norwich Business Improvement District, compares it to the arrival of a major company, like Aviva, bringing a new edge to the city.
Other regeneration projects in Norwich include the demolition of the unappealing Anglia Square shopping centre, making way for 1,100 new homes and a vibrant community space. This transformation is part of a broader effort to revitalize the city, making it one of Europe's most liveable neighbourhoods. The project's success hinges on the East Norwich Delivery Board's efforts, and the local authority is confident it will create a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance Norwich's already unique character.
