Bold headline: Tasmania removes interstate prescription barriers, expanding access to care for locals.
Tasmanians who currently obtain prescriptions from mainland doctors will soon be able to have those medications filled at their local pharmacies, thanks to new reform set to take effect in early 2026.
Tasmania’s parliament passed legislation this week permitting pharmacists to dispense medications prescribed by interstate practitioners. This means prescriptions for ADHD medications, medicinal cannabis, opioids, and benzodiazepines written by doctors on the mainland can be filled in Tasmania.
Health Minister Bridget Archer described the reform as overdue. “With telehealth increasingly common, many Tasmanians receive medical care from providers outside the state. Until now, local pharmacists were barred from dispensing certain prescriptions, and these changes remove that barrier,” she said. “These common-sense reforms will streamline access to the medicines people need, regardless of where their doctor practices.”
The bill received unanimous support in the Legislative Council.
Interstate visitors with valid prescriptions will also be eligible to have them dispensed locally.
Tasmanian Pharmacy Guild branch president Joe O’Malley highlighted the potential benefits for patients. “More and more Tasmanians are seeking care remotely from the mainland,” he noted. “When scripts can be filled locally, it translates into better health outcomes for our community.”
The Greens added an amendment to extend driving protections for individuals using prescribed medicinal cannabis obtained and dispensed interstate, describing it as closing a “loophole.” Bass MP Cecily Rosol commented that the amendment is crucial for Tasmanians who receive medicinal cannabis on the mainland, noting that they will no longer be penalized for driving after using this medication.
Despite the reforms, prescribers from outside Tasmania will still require approval from the Department of Health before issuing Schedule 8 medicines. Certain therapies remain excluded, including drugs for voluntary assisted dying, opioid pharmacotherapy, and medicines used in clinical trials.
The changes are anticipated to take effect in early 2026, marking a significant shift in how Tasmanians access prescription medications across state lines.
