The Bedford Estates, trustees of Woburn Abbey, have decided to sell the painting to fund their extensive seven-year renovation project. The house, a historic landmark and tourist attraction, has been closed since 2019, and the trustees argue that the sale is necessary to ensure the continued preservation and enhancement of the Abbey's collection.
But here's where it gets controversial: the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has stepped in, placing a temporary export ban on the painting. They believe that this masterpiece, created in Rome around 1640, is of outstanding aesthetic importance and significance to the study of Claude Lorrain and the development of landscape painting.
The DCMS aims to give UK galleries and institutions the opportunity to acquire the painting for the nation. They argue that this work, with its impressive scale and quality, has been an integral part of the UK's cultural landscape for over 250 years and should remain accessible to the public.
And this is the part most people miss: the decision to sell the painting was not taken lightly. The Bedford Estates highlight the unforeseen issues that arose during the refurbishment, including the poor condition of the building's roof, which extended the project beyond expectations. They emphasize that the sale is a strategic move to secure the future of the Abbey's collection.
Christopher Baker, from the reviewing committee, adds an interesting perspective, noting that the painting has a rich history, having been part of a Flemish merchant's collection in Rome before finding its way to Woburn Abbey.
