A significant emergency response is currently taking place following a truck accident that involved several vehicles on Picton Road, a critical route linking Wollongong and south-west Sydney.
According to New South Wales Ambulance officials, the incident occurred around midday on Wednesday when a semi-trailer struck a guardrail before colliding with six other cars near Cataract, which is situated north of Wollongong.
Emergency paramedics, including a helicopter unit, are on-site attending to a total of 13 individuals affected by the crash. Notably, a man in his 30s has sustained serious injuries to his pelvis, chest, and arms, necessitating an airlift to a hospital in Sydney for urgent medical care. Meanwhile, three additional individuals are being taken to Wollongong Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
Fortunately, the male truck driver was extricated from the wreckage without sustaining any injuries, thanks to the quick response from Fire and Rescue NSW. In the aftermath of the collision, specialized fire trucks are actively managing approximately 100 liters of diesel fuel that has spilled onto the roadway. Superintendent Adam Dewberry reassured concerned citizens by stating that the fuel poses no threat to passing vehicles. He added, "The Rural Fire Service is providing fire protection to ensure safety in the area."
As a result of this incident, Picton Road is currently closed in both directions, and Transport NSW has indicated that police investigations into the crash will likely take some time before the road can be reopened.
